SZA and Keke Palmer on a Comedy Film Produced by Issa Rae

Four-time Grammy awardee, SZA, is set to debut in acting alongside Keke Palmer in a yet-to-be-revealed comedy film produced by Issa Rae, reported Deadline exclusively. The film is being produced under the auspices of Rae’s media company named HOORAE. Macro Film Studios associates, Deniese Davis, Charles D. King, James Lopez, and Poppy Hanks, are also part of the production team.

Leadership Names Involved

The director’s mantle of the comedy film goes to Lawrence Lamont, who previously directed Rap Sh!t. Syreeta Singleton from Rap Sh!t will handle the script. Recent SNL episode collaborators, Palmer and SZA, united again for this mysterious project. The film arose from the CoCre lab at Sony Pictures, designed by ColorCreative and Columbia Pictures to foster emerging multi-cultural screenwriters and introduce them to the mechanisms of developing their debut studio features.

SZA Makes The Leap into Acting

SZA has been analysing various prospective projects before she decided to join this buddy comedy. The allure of acting with Palmer made this opportunity too enthralling to refuse. Meanwhile, due to a recent episode of the Club Shay Shay podcast featuring her Insecure co-star Amanda Seales discussing their non-existing relationship, Issa Rae has had the internet abuzz. It seems Rae is simply focused on supporting talent from the Black community and sidestepping any distractions.

For Palmer, this new project follows an outstanding performance in Jordan Peele’s NOPE, her Emmy-winning self-made project Turnt Up With the Taylors, and her Emmy-acclaimed game show hosting gig- Password.

DPH Hot Take

This newly announced film, even with its secretive plot, already promises to be an exciting addition to pop culture history. With established talent SZA making her anticipated acting debut alongside well-loved star Keke Palmer, and under the production prowess of the formidable Issa Rae, it’s undeniable that audiences will be eagerly waiting to hear more about this stylish project. The uniqueness of this venture is not simply in its star-studded team, but also its birthplace at the CoCre lab, showcasing their commitment to backing and elevating emerging, diverse screenwriting talent.
