The Chi Renews for Season Seven
Another Season
The much-acclaimed Showtime original series, The Chi, has a reason to give its fans joy as it is set to return with a seventh season. In light of the second half of the sixth season due on May 10, Paramont+ and Showtime have decided to renew the series.
Continuing Success
This step comes in the wake of the triumph of season six, which made records as the most viewed season ever on the streaming platform, noting a rise of nearly 25 percent over season five. Preparations for the production of season seven are to kick-off later this month in Chicago.
Accolades and Praise
Nina L. Diaz, the President of Content and Chief Creative Officer, Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios and Paramount Media Networks, expressed enthusiasm over the series’ continuity. Diaz commended Lena Waithe’s unique storytelling emphasizing its holistic view into the realities of life in Chicago and the wider African American experience in the US.
Challenging Journey
The series, under Lena Waithe’s Hillman Grad banner and executive produced by Common, narrates the engagements of Southside Chicago residents whose lives interlock due to specific events bringing them closer. Previous seasons showcased the difficulties the characters had in dealing with local gangster Douda, played by Curtis Cook, and his oppressive actions impacting Southside residents.
Despite the success of the Chi, it has not been smooth sailing. The show was nearly derailed due to on-set dramas involving former cast member, Jason Mitchell. The character played by Mitchell was written off in the third season, yet the show has flourished ever since.
DPH Hot Take
In spite of a tumultuous journey including significant cast changes and on-set drama, The Chi continues to demonstrate its resilience, offering an unmatched portrayal of Chicago’s Southside life. The decision by Paramount+ and Showtime to renew the show speaks to the significance of this narrative in today’s television landscape. As we look forward to season seven, we anticipate further growth of the show’s visibility and impact as it continues to narrate the often-ignored complexities of urban life in America. The Chi’s continued success is proof that showcasing diverse and authentic experiences resonates deeply with audiences, a trend we hope to see more of in future programming.
