Questlove Weighs in on Drake-Kendrick Dispute on Social Media
Rocker’s Remarks Spark Near-Instant Backlash
In the wake of the highly-publicized fallout between hip-hop giants Kendrick Lamar and Drake, noted musician and The Roots band drummer, Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, has offered his critique. The 53-year old took to his social media to share what is arguably one of the most contentious comments yet regarding what’s seen as one of the fiercest rapper feuds in the genre’s history.
“This Wasn’t About Skill”
Opening with the dramatic phrase, “Nobody won the war,” Questlove’s polarizing statement described the entire incident as unproductive, equating it to a carnival-like brawl rather than a test of talent. He stated that the feud did nothing but cause animosity and disregard the truth. His statement furthered that those cheering the feud on would eventually mourn the downfall of hip-hop.
In the caption of the post, Questlove seemed to target Drake and Kendrick, challenging their decision to entertain their audience with this conflict rather than their music.
As far as the feud goes, Kendrick has shown no interest in a reconciliation, expressing his disillusionment with Drake, and the music industry at large, in his tracks ‘Euphoria’ and ‘Not Like Us’. Meanwhile, Drake’s response, ‘The Heart Part 6,’ marked his ostensible end-comment.
Simultaneously, he is dealing with a separate crisis regarding a drive-by shooting outside his residence and a failed break-in attempt.
Divided Opinions on Social Media
Questlove’s take on the feud stirred diverse reactions across X, the former Twitter, reflecting a variety of audience sentiments.
DPH Hot Take
In this closing paragraph, it’s important to note that disputes, while inevitable, can threaten the integrity and growth of art forms like hip-hop. Having veteran artists like Questlove voice their concern only underscores the gravity of the situation. If the industry’s focus pivots from innovation and skill to petty disagreements and public fiascos, it may figuratively poison the roots of the genre’. The growth and survival of the Hip-Hop culture relies on the actions of its icons – both not to provoke, and not to succumb to unnecessary controversies.
