Upcoming Wu-Tang Clan Video Game to Feature Animation Style of Sony’s Spider-Verse Movies
‘Project Shaolin’: What to Expect
According to the latest reports from gaming insiders, the anticipated Wu-Tang Clan video game, dubbed “Project Shaolin,” is taking shape. The game, initially hinted at in a 2021 NVIDIA leak that exposed a range of projects in development, will allegedly feature an animation style reminiscent of Sony’s animated Spider-Man films.
Game Details
Details from a joint report by Jez Corden of WindowsCentral and Jeff Grubb of VentureBeat indicate that the game is a third-person melee-oriented RPG with four-player co-op. It has been described as heavily featuring the Wu-Tang Clan themselves, not just on the soundtrack, but in the game’s content: loot, weapons, and gear from defeated enemies are all purportedly part of the package. The game is being developed by Brass Lion Entertainment, a studio established in 2019 by Manveer Heir.
In the alpha stage of its development cycle, the game is slated to offer fast-paced melee combat with a specific focus on intertwining music and combat. There will be a variety of weapons available for players, with four unique playstyles. Notably, the game is expected to showcase a broad catalog of Wu-Tang Clan’s music, most of which has been remixed by DJ Just Blaze.
Playable Wu-Tang Clan Members in Project Shaolin
Moreover, it has been revealed that all nine members of the Wu-Tang Clan will be playable characters, each providing a limited-time buff with distinct advantages like ultimate moves and health boosts. The previewed game footage, although not shareable, reportedly has animations similar to Sony’s animated Spider-Verse films.
This is not Wu-Tang Clan’s first venture into the gaming world. Their affinity for martial arts and kung-fu films inspired the 1999 PlayStation game Wu-Tang Shaolin Style, where members lent their voices to characters reflecting their rap monikers. They also appeared in other games such as Def Jam: Vendetta and Def Jam: Fight For New York.
DPH Hot Take
Blending the Wu-Tang Clan’s music and persona with the engaging dynamics of a third-person RPG, “Project Shaolin” seems poised to tantalize fans of both gaming and hip-hop. This fusion of music and interactive entertainment signifies a promising trend in the gaming industry that embraces cultural diversity and innovation. However, it is crucial to view these initial reports with a cautious optimism as the gaming landscape is replete with highly anticipated titles not living up to their hype. As we eagerly await the game’s premiere and potentially an Xbox Showcase reveal, one can only hope that “Project Shaolin” lives up to its promising potential.
